Tulum Airport Makes It Easy to Reach Tulum
It’s official, getting to Tulum is now easier than ever due to the opening of the new Tulum Airport. A journey that was known to be a lengthy one, involving a flight to Cancun as well as a two-hour drive south has now been cut short thanks to the opening of the new Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport or Tulum Airport (TQO) in Quintana Roo, Mexico. The opening of the airport has been long overdue. Even though it was first announced in 2011, the project has been a start-stop one over the years due to several issues including funding.
However, in the year 2022, the momentum officially picked up. And finally on the momentous day of December 1st, 2023, the airport welcomed its first domestic flights. Tulum Airport will be a game changer for Tulum, there is no doubt about that. However, the airport will also have a positive impact on more remote beach destinations. There are several destinations near Tulum that lie further south and have always been way out of reach for many travelers. But now thanks to the airport they will become more accessible.
Airlines that Will Fly to Tulum Airport
Currently, Tulum Airport is only welcoming domestic flights with carriers Aeromexico and VivaAerobus via Guadalajara, Mexico City, Monterrey, Tijuana, and Toluca. However, reports suggest that from March 28th, 2024, the airport will also start welcoming international flights from the United States airlines. In 2024, the following international carriers will operate flights in Tulum:
JetBlue – From June daily service from New York’s JFK will begin.
American Airlines – Aircrafts will fly twice on a daily basis from Dallas/Fort Worth as well as daily from Miami and Charlotte.
Spirit Airlines – This U.S. carrier will fly seven days a week from Orlando as well as Fort Lauderdale.
Delta Air Lines – From March 28, Delta will fly daily between Atlanta and Tulum.
United Airlines – United will operate daily service to Tulum from Los Angeles, Houston, Newark, and Chicago O’Hare.
Location of Tulum Airport
The newly opened Tulum Airport can be found residing 20 miles southwest of Tulum proper, however in order to reach central Tulum from the hub, it will take travelers about an hour. But, this time will also be shortened once the connector road to the main Highway 307 is complete. It is anticipated that the connector road will be complete before the international flights arrive in March.
Rideshare services like Uber and Lyft will not be permitted at Tulum Airport due to the rising tensions between the rideshare providers and lock taxi syndicates. It is also expected that the airport will have its own train station connected to the Maya Train. Maya Train is a government project that began partial service from Cancun to Campeche on the 15th of December. Once the project is completed it will connect Tulum and Cancun with several destinations around the Yucatan Peninsula including Bacalar, Merida, as well as Palenque.
Development in Tulum
Tulum has gone through a phase of redevelopment, and the opening of the new airport will deistically change the picture of Tulum. Tulum now calls itself home to a number of accommodations. Even though many of the OG bungalows are long gone, similarly minimalistic and boho accommodations that also come jam-packed with amenities have now taken their place like the 26-villa jungle-shrouded accommodation Muaré. Moreover, Tulum now also has a number of all-inclusive resorts like Dreams Tulum Resort & Spa, Secrets Tulum Resort Beach Club, and Hilton Tulum Riviera Maya, making it an ultimate vacation destination.
