Time Out Revealed the World’s Coolest Neighbourhoods for 2023 – From Selection to Creation

Each year, the world publisher Time Out polls its contributors, staffers, city dwellers and local experts from around the world to assemble a list of the 40 most interesting, fashionable, and fun neighbourhoods in the world. Keeping up with the annual tradition, once again this year Time Out revealed the world’s coolest neighbourhoods for 2023. More than 12,000 people had their say in this year’s shortlist and provided names of the neighbourhoods in their hometowns that are most frequented by travelers.

Once that was done, Time Out, took the help of city editors and local experts, who know their cities better than anyone else, and narrowed the selection with the help of their expertise and insight. The final list was created by taking into consideration various factors including community and social ventures, thriving street life as well and access to open and green space.

As a result of the rise in post-pandemic digital nomadism, an explosion of multi-purpose cultural centres, cafes, and brand-new community spaces is seen throughout the world. But even though most neighbourhoods have undergone tremendous transformation over the recent years, at heart they remain resolutely local. Despite the cool cafes and slick new developments playing a vital role in bringing in new crowds, neighbourhood stalwarts from family greengrocers to old pubs keep it real. 

The world’s coolest neighbourhoods this year selected by Time Out are the places that harbor big personalities and resonate with charm. The diversity of each area is reflected in its culture, festivals, and food, and these neighborhoods are where the locals and tourists come to play. 

Time Out Revealed the World’s Coolest Neighbourhoods for 2023 – Where Are They?

The top coolest neighbourhood on the list is Laureles, located in the bustling city of Medellin, Colombia. Medellin also has the honor of being the hometown of musicians Karol G and J Balvin. Time Out stated that the up-and-coming Laureles has a “pretty laid-back reputation” even though it is home to the famed nightlife street LA 70 and Estadio Atanasio Girardot soccer stadium. Despite all this, the neighbourhood has so far been successful in resisting the gentrification other Medellin neighborhoods have gone through. 

Of the top 10 neighbourhoods in the list, 5 are in Europe. For the first time, the Historic Smithfield section of Dublin and waterfront Havnen in Copenhagen appeared on the list. From Asia, the buzzy neighborhood of Sheung Wan, located in Hong Kong was dubbed as one of the world’s coolest neighbourhoods, and from the United States a neighbourhood from New Orleans, Mid-City made it to the top 10.
