Shanghai Disney Resort announced the opening date for a new land, inspired by the beloved movie Zootopia. Ever since the announcement, fans cannot keep their excitement and rightfully so. After a long wait, Zootopia will finally be opening its gates to Disney fanatics on 20 December 2023. This will be the eighth theme land in Shanghai Disneyland and will bring to life the characters and the worlds of the film Zootopia with a Chinese twist. Shanghai Disneyland’s approach of being “Authentically Disney, Distinctly Chinese” will combine the elements of Disney’s beloved film, Zootopia with Chinese culture. 

The themed land that took several years to develop will allow guests to fully immerse themselves in the mammalian metropolis of Zootopia “where anyone can be anything”. From new exciting rides to dining and shopping options, the land will harbor all the never-before-seen features.

Delays and Obstacles – Shanghai Disneyland Announced the Opening Date for Zootopia

Originally the theme land Zootopia, modeled after the Savanna Central was set to be opened by the end of 2021. However, the pandemic, which got in the way of almost everything, also delayed the opening date of Zootopia theme land. Therefore, when Shanghai Disneyland announced the opening date of Zootopia, fans from all around the world sprang into action, planning their trip to the Chinese city in order to witness the opening of the grand theme land. 

The announcement came on October 24, 2023, and grabbed the entire world in its chokehold. In order to not only extend Disney’s legendary service standards to the new Zootopia theme land but also provide the fans with the experience of their life, cast members are undertaking extensive preparations for operational readiness and are testing and fine-tuning all of the experiences in Zootopia. Zootopia, which was co-created by hundreds of sagacious minds from across the world, and the filmmakers at Walt Disney Animation Studios will be the epitome of creativity and state-of-the-art technology. 

A Walk to Remember – Shanghai Disneyland Announced the Opening Date for Zootopia

When the doors of Zootopia land will open, the fanatics will be greeted by Mane Street lined with storefronts in a variety of sizes. This Mane Street will lead the visitors to the civic plaza, Savannah Central, the very place where Judy Hopps first stepped foot into the optimistic realm of Zootopia. Visitors will be greeted and welcomed by the characters of the film as they stroll down the mammalian metropolis. Joe Schott, President and General Manager at Shanghai Disney Resort said:

When Shanghai Disneyland announced the opening date for Zootopia many wondered about the rides the new theme park will carry. One ride, that is the talk to the mammalian metropolis is the Zootopia: Hot Pursuit. In this ride, guests will hop on the all-terrain cruiser that will be powered by a trackless ride system and will engage in an action-filled chase through Zootopia’s various districts. Apart from the rides, there will also be a new merchandise store called Fashions by Fru Fru, owned by Zootopia’s fashionista Fru Fru, where fanatics will be able to purchase all things Zootopia. 

Just as the movie, Zootopia immersed the fans in the storyline by keeping them on the edge of their seat till the very end, the theme land will channel the same energy and will feature multiple stories and scenarios that will allow guests to dive into the nostalgic scenes from the movie. Moreover, as no Disney theme land is complete without its bespoke treats and beverages, Zootopia will also feature many themed drinks, snacks, sweet treats, and other delicacies.
